Werder Bremen are ready to give gas in their trainings camp in Belek, Turkey to prepare for the Bundesliga re-start. Just one day after arrival, on Friday, 06.01.2006, Werder play the current Turkish league fifth placed side Besiktas Istanbul in the "Efes Pilsen Cup" (live on Eurosport 8:30pm).

The games throws up a reunion with an old favourite. Ex-Werder striker Ailton had made his way back to Turkey after his winter holiday and will be part of the Besiktas squad to face his ex-colleagues. Even captain Frank Baumann had to admit that this has come as a surprise for some: "Where he exactly is or when he'll return from his winter holiday is often a mystery, that includes for himself. I'm looking forward to seeing him again." The lively Brazilian was part of Werder's 2004 double winning side before moving to Schalke and then on to Turkey. There he has had a tough time sportingly, with Besiktas lying some 25 points behind arch rivals Fenerbache after 17 games and sixteen points adrift of Galatasary. The 32 year old has had to suffer a lot of criticism and was dropped from the squad by trainer Jean Tigana, leading him to consider leaving the club pre-winter. Ailton caused more upheavel when he collapsed in the airplane on the way to a UEFA cup tie against Guimares in Portugal and had to be treated for one and a half hours after hiiting his head on a seat. With all that behind him, the Brazilian has returned from his winter break feeling rested. Werder will have to be careful of the striker as he returned from his holiday early. The last time that occurred he became league champion, cup winner and leading goal scorer in Germany.

Werder Bremen took part in the Turkish beer cup two years ago when they finished second, losing the final to Galatasary 2:0. Whether or not the German side can reach the final on this occasion remains to be seen with Werder facing a tough training programme in Turkey. Captain Frank Baumann knows what awaits them in the trainings camp: "We'll run a lot, train a lot and play a lot - it'll be strenuous." Trainer Thomas Schaaf added: "We're not here to enjoy the sun and the good weather."

For those who wish to follow Werders progress in Turkey, Eurosport will transmit all four tournament games. The winner of Werder versus Besiktas will play the winner of Galatasary versus Borussia Dortmund on Monday, 09.01.2006 at 7pm. The third place play-off takes place on Sunday, 08.01.2006 at 7pm. All games will be played at the Atatürk-Stadium in Antalya.
