And the title goes to...Werder Bremen!! At the beginning of December Tim Borowski was honoured as 'Player of the Month - November' by German sport magazine 'Kicker'. A couple of weeks later the award for December would go to Johan Micoud. With that Werder Bremen players snatch the award for the third month in a row.
Werder also took care of early Christmas celebrations on the pitch with a sensational 5:1 win over Panathinaikos Athens in the Champions League, goals coming from Johan Micoud, Torsten Frings, Miroslav Klose with protective face mask and Nelson Valdez all giving the Greeks a run around. Werder now face Italian giants Juventus Turin in the last 16 of the Champions League with superstars such as Pavel Nedved, Alessandro del Piero and David Trezeguet. Just hours after the draw Werder made the next coup with trainer Thomas Schaaf extending his contract until 2008.
Back in the Bundesliga the Green-Whites continue to go from strenght to strenght. After a 2:0 home win against MSV Duisburg, Werder returned to the Weser with all three points after a 4:1 win in Cologne. It was Naldo's hammer free-kick that turned the tides at the RheinEnergie-Stadium with Micoud and Klose (2) sealing the points. No wonder the subsequent Christmas party at the Bremer-Park Hotel turned into such a festival.
Still one of the season's biggest highlights was ahead of Werder. The northern derby against Hamburg SV. The best defence in the league against the best attack. Especially for the game, Werder wore a charity shirt with "Beluga School for Life" in place of their KIK logo. Werder played their guests off the park in the first half but went into the break with just a 1:0 lead. In the second half HSV stabilised and found the equaliser.
For Bremen there awaited another massive northern derby in the DFB-Cup where they paid a visit to Hanover's AWD-Arena. Again impressive, the Green-Whites won the tie 4:1 and now await yet another northern derby in the quarter final at Hamburg's St. Pauli.
While the rest of the squad enjoyed their Christmas break, Johan Micoud had one more game to play - all in the name of good will. "Le Chef" was invited to take part in the All-Star "Match Against Poverty" with Real Madrid stars Zidan and Ronaldo. Micoud was once again on the winning side with his fellow countryman taking the tie 4:2.
