Unstoppable. Even trailing at the Berlin Olympia Stadium wasn't enough to knock Werder out of their stride. Despite the absence of Miroslav Klose, the Green-Whites turned the tie with goals from Tim Borowski and Nelson Valdez. Even ex-Werder striker Ailton was impressed by their form and paid his old colleagues a visit to acknowledge the teams morale.
During international week, as Patrick Owomoyela were left licking their wounds after a 2:1 defeat in Turkey, Nelson Valdez was the cause of ecstacy in his native Paraguay. The Werder striker's 1:0 winner against Venezuela was his countries ticket to the World Cup finals. Jurica Vranjes and Ivan Klasnic could also celebrate their qualification with Croatia but Daniel Jensen and his Danish colleagues could now make other plans for the summer.
Back in the Bundesliga, Thomas Schaaf's men were in top form and threateningb for the top spot with a 6:2 win against Nuremburg. Again it was Miroslav Klose who drew most attention as he returned from illness with a hat-trick. Two goals from Klasnic and one from Borowski finished the Franken side off.
In the Champions League Werder were left waiting for their first win. A bitter equaliser for Udinese Calcio in Italy late on in the tie cost Werder all three points.
The effects were visable back home as the Green-Whites could only manage a 0:0 draw with Hanover 96. Werder also had problems overcoming Wolfsburg in the DFB-Cup, eventually proceeding with a 7:6 penalty shoot-out win. The next round was to dish up yet another meeting with Hanover.
The next Bundesliga game was then business as usual for Werder, beating Eintracht Frankfurt 4:1 in front of their own fans with goals from Miroslav Klose, Torsten Frings and a Tim Borowski brace.
Werders recent successful cooperation with sportsware company KAPPA was then in October also extended by three years with the promise of more attacking football and trendy kits ahead.
