Christmas came early for many clubs and groups around Bremen when Werder's ball supplier 'Derbystar' joined with Werder as part of their "100 Schools - 100 Clubs" project and donated 3,000 footballs to get them on their way.

Christmas came early for many clubs and groups around Bremen when Werder's ball supplier 'Derbystar' joined with Werder as part of their "100 Schools - 100 Clubs" project and donated 3,000 footballs to get them on their way.

With Co-trainer Kalli Kamp laid up after a hip operation, 43 year old ex-professional Matthias Höhnerbach took over the free position alongside Thomas Schaaf.

It's activie as always before the strat of the season for the Green-Whites. In memory of the late chairman, the street "Am Weserstadion" was re-named "Franz Böhmert Straße". Not a change of name but a change of number for Nelson Valdez. The Paraguayean's dream came true when he was given the number 9 previously worn by Angelos Charisteas and could pass on his number 38 shirt.

Werder were also setting new fashion trends in goalkeeper jerseys with the men in goal having the choice of yellow, orange or pink. New signing Tim Wiese opted for pink early on and caught many an eye. Unfortunately it was only to be in friendly games. In the final pre-season friendly win over Hansa Rostock (2:0), Wiese again suffered a cruciate ligament tear and will be out of action until some time in 2006.

Werders preparations got off to a good start beating SV Blau-Weiß Bornreihe 16:1 and then winning 15:0 against SV Niederkassel. The regional side won the match in the "BetandWin Supermatch" competition. With Miroslav Klose still laid up after his knee operation, Ivan Klasnic proved to be in top form during these games netting five times. Not to be out done by the Croatian, Nelson Valdez and Mohamed Zidan both notched up hat-tricks in the final 7:0 win over SV Meppen at the end of an exhausting pre-season campaign.

The next two games were less inspiring for Werder who lost 2:1 to Energie Cottbus and the 3:1 to 1860 Munich. It was a 3:1 win against Partizan Belgrade that put the Green-Whites back on course. The game against Partizan will be better remembered for the rough manner in which it was played.

Werder only made it to the semi-final of the League Cup, which would have been the first available silverware of the season. The Green-Whites bowed out after a 2:1 defeat by Schalke. On the terraces, Naldo watched his new team for the first time, just days later the Brazilian signed on the dotted line.

The Werder faitful were not all too dismayed by the defeat in the Ruhr Valley and this could be seen at the "Day of the Fans" when an estimated 25,000 turned out to wish their team well for the new season.
