The final games of the 2004/2005 season are ahead but nothing seems to want to go right for Werder. In Dortmund Werder attack one goal for 90 minutes and lose 1:0. Even Dortmund coach Bert van Marwijk admitted "Bremen were too good for us", the result was almost embarrassing.
With other sports brimming positive in Bremen, tides began to cahnge in football too. In the last game of the season, Werder turned a 0:1 deficit around to beat Freiburg and secure at least UEFA cup football.
The last home game of the season always has the sad side of bidding farewell to players leaving the club. On this occasion four stars make way, Ludovic Magnin (Stuttgart), Paul Stalteri (Spurs), Fabian Ernst (Schalke) and Alexander Walke (Freiburg). A few days later Krisztian Lisztes left for Gladbach and Pascal Borel headed to LR Ahlen.
Werders opponents results had left the Green-Whites with an outside chance of making a Champions League spot. Werder would not only have to win in Kaiserslautern but also hope that both Hertha BSC Berlin and Stuttgart slip up.
Amazingly Stuttgart lost to Bayern Munich and Hertha could only draw 0:0 with Hanover. Werder won in Lautern and snatched third place on the 34th match day of the season. Champions League Qualification lay ahead.
