April is renowned for changeable weather, which was comparable to the form of the Green-Whites. Firstly Werder suffered a 2:1 home defeat to VfB Stuttgart, then won the title of Kings of the North by beating Hamburg SV 2:1 thanks to goals from Klasnic and Klose.
There were ups and downs for Klose too who first scored against HSV and then injured his knee and was later to be forced out of the Confed Cup due to the injury. At the same time, captain Frank Baumann would also be forced out of action with an ankle injury that would need surgery.
After their high in Hamburg followed a further fall at home, losing 0:1 to their direct opponent for the Champions League qualifying spot and leaving thenselves almost no hope of making the top three.
Not even the DFB-Cup was going to relieve Werder of their misery. In a tie that was delayed due to the election of a new Pope. A Klsnic goal which was unfairly disallowed in added time for offside could have stopped the game going to extra-time. With the sides locked it was Fabian Ernst who would blow his chance and miss the decisive penalty against his future employer.
The disappointment was still noticeable when Werder served up one of the worst first half performances of the season against Bayer Leverkusen and eventually lost the tie 1:2.
At the end of the month Werder got bact to winning ways with a 3:0 win in Bielefeld which was to become the start of a Werder chase that would last till the end of the season. The tie included one of the most unusual scenes of the season as referee Herbert Fandel blew for a penalty with the game poised at 0:0 but reversed his decision when Miroslav Klose admitted that the goalkeeper had won the ball cleanly. The result was Klose picking up the Fair-Play award.
Off the pitch Werder launced their next member offensive with the motto - "Komm ins Team" with a scarf being made available with the individual members name included. The Werder family grew distinctly yet again and in April some 10,000 people visited the WUSEUM.
