At the beginning of March, Werder appeared to have all of Germany under it's control. Firstly the Gree-Whites had to face the Bayern Munich reserves in the DFB-Cup in Bremen on an icy snow covered pitch and won 3:0 in almost unplayable conditions to move on to the cup semi-finals. The draw would pitch Werder against FC Schalke 04.

The game was the start of the Munich week when Werder had to then take on Bayern Munich's first team. Werder were to have their good run broken when a Micael Ballack header gave the Munich side a 1:0 win.

The defeat in Munich was followed by a much more bitter one in the Champions League when the Hanseatic side travelled to Lyon with the hope of putting right the 0:3 home defeat by the French side. Having thrown caution to the wind and going all out offensively, Werder crashed to a 7:2 loss. The affects of this dificult to swallow defeat could be seen the following weekend with Werder barely able to manage a 0:0 draw with Mainz. Thomas Schaaf had to put together a programme for football rejuvination, and he did just that.

The Green-White went on to win their next game 2:1 in Nuremburg and give Thomas Schaaf his 100th win in 200th Bundesliga game as trainer. It was also a special day for Krisztian Lisztes who returned to action afet an eleven month break through injury.

March was very much a rollercoaster month of ups and downs. Fabian Ernst was named 'Player of the Month' for February and Aaron Hunt 'Newcomer of the Month' by ZDF. The whole Werder team were once again honoured by the City of Bremen for their previous season's double.
