Werders 2005 got off to a sad start with many still mourning the recently deceased chairman of the board Dr. Franz Böhmert. All of football Germany joined the Green-Whites in sending Dr. Böhmert the long time Werder boss at the Bremen Cathedral on 06.01.2005.

International headlines were focused on the Tsunami disaster in Asia. Ümit Davala experienced the incident at close quarters on holiday on the Maldives and was able to cut his holiday short thanks to a plane chartered by a Turkish politician. The Werder team managed to drum up €100,000 in donations for the "Ein Herz für Kinder" (A heart for children) charity.

Nelson Valdez's break was not effected by the Tsunami but his return from Paraguay was delayed on a nmber of occasions and he eventually made it back to Germany after 43 hours.

Maybe the early January turmoil was one of the reasons for Werders indoor side being unable to pick up a tournament win with the Green-Whites playing in Oldenburg and Schwerin, losing one little and one big final.

The first friendlies of the year were equally turbulant, Werder losing 5:1 against second division Eintracht Trier during their trainings camp in Turkey. A 1:1 draw with Bulgarian champions Lok Plovdiv was followed by a 1:4 against Fenerbache Istanbul and then a close 6:5 against Trabzonspor - which led to Thomas Schaaf feeling unsatisfied with preparations.

One possible reason for this couold have been a number of recurring injuries and an internal dispute between Fabian Ernsz and Johan Micoud. The icing came when highly rated new signing from Egypt Mohamed Zidan was so badly tackled against HSV in Kropp that he would be forced out of action for several weeks. Curios situation in that game when it went to penalties after a 2:2 draw, fans stormed the pitch during the shoot-out and both HSV and Werder were awarded a trophy.

It was no wonder to Werder fans that during this crazy January that the refereeing scandal surrounding Robert Hoyzer should come to light. Just one day after the first game of 2005 rumours of the match fixing scandal shocked the Bundesliga. Werder went down 2:1 in their first match of the year against Schalke thanks to a suspiciously off-side goal by ex-Werder striker Ailton.

Some light appeared at the end of the tunnel by the end of the month. The football gods blocked the referee's view of a hand ball by Frank Baumann in his own box against Hansa Rostock and Werder went on to win 3:2. Just after the game Miroslav Klose dodged the traffic to rush to hospital where soon after he became a father to twins.
