Wednesday, 21.12.2006 sees the fifth cup meeting of the two traditional north German clubs Werder Bremen and Hanover 96. The Bremen sides record is a positive with three wins from four, losing only once in the semi-final 1991/1992 when Hanover went on to collect the trophy.
One major change has taken place in Hanover since the 0:0 draw with Werder on the tenth match day. Peter Neururer has taken over from then trainer Ewald Lienen at the 96 helm. Since Neurerer's appointment Hanover remain unbeaten and will spend the winter break in eight place in the table. "They're a more attacking side now, especially at home. It won't be an easy task for us", considered Werder trainer Thomas Schaaf. General manager Klaus Allofs is of a similar opinion: "I watched Hanover's last game against Leverkusen and they have become more attacking since the change of trainer, playing often with three strikers. They were very aggressive against Bayer." The ex-German international see's one other important strenght in the 96 side: "There is definately no problem with their team spirit."
Thomas Schaaf is looking forward to the game with confidence, his team having played very well during the clubs last meeting: "We had the chance to win the game but we passed it up and that's why I hope all the more, that we can perform well this time and get the win." Schaaf is expected to stay faithful to the starting eleven which face HSV at the weekend, with a question over the possibility of the K&K strike force returning, Ivan Klasnic still not fully fit after his appendix operation. "He's stronger, more secure and has more power than in the games since his return but he's not up to 90 minutes yet", commented the trainer and thereby dampening Werder fan hopes of seeing their so much loved duo back in action.
Werder Bremen continue their love affair with the DFB cup: "That's why we want to make the next round", admitted Schaaf. The games profile has lead to Media director Tino Polster suggesting that the travelling, expected 5,000, fans to make their way to the stadium as early as possible to avoid congestion and delays.
