Headcoach Thomas Schaaf has prematurely extended his contract at Werder Bremen by two years until 30.06.2008. That was the announcement made at a press conference in Bremen on Thursday afternoon. "We're very happy that we can continue to work with Thomas Schaaf. This new contract is our expression on how much we appreciate the hard work Thomas has put in over recent years. The team carries his signature and with him Werder have risen to become a great club again", said Jürgen L. Born, chairman of the board and added: "It would be sad for the club, for the fans and the whole city if we weren't to continue together."
Thomas Schaaf commented on his contract extension: "I have chosen Werder Bremen because there is a lot to do and to achieve here. During negotiations we discussed future goals and it's clear that Werder have international ambitions and intend to be amongst the top sides in the Bundesliga. That's why my signature was exactly the right decision."
The Werder coach has held his position since 10.05.1999 making him the leagues longest serving coach. With Schaaf on the bench, Werder won the DFB-Cup in 1999 and achieved the domestic double in 2004 as well as reaching the Champions League twice.
