Werder Bremen remain a super power on their own turf after they managed to clock up their seventh win in eight home games on the 15th match day of thseason with a 2:0 (0:0) over MSV Duisburg.

Werder made two changes to the side which lost 2:1 at Schalke with Leon Andreasen replacing Naldo (shoulder injury) and Aaron Hunt coming in for the suspended Torsten Frings and took the initiative from the out set. Werder rolled forward, MSV keeper Georg Koch denying Aaron Hunt after a pass from Jurica Vranjes with just four minutes on the clock. Hunt came close again soon after when he profitted from a mistake by Uwe Möhrle but couldn't get his shot on goal.

Three minutes later Hunt's strike partner Nelson Valdez got in on the act. The Paraguayean got on the end of a pass into the box, rounded the advancing Koch and flicked a shot goalwards only to have his effort cleared almost off the goalline by Alexander Meyer who had rushed back to cover for his keeper. Soon after Tim Borowski tried his luck from distance and flashed a drive just off the mark.

Crossbar cracker for Hunt

Duisburg managed to reduce the pace of the game and relieve some of the pressure on the defence but trainer Norbert Meier's offensive efforts remained stagnent. Alexander Bugera had two chances i quick succession to give the visitors an undeserved lead, first having his attempt blocked by Andreas reinke and then thrashing the rebound over the bar (23'). Werder were soon back on the move again with Johan Micoud turning a header after a cross from the impressive Aaron Hunt into the side netting (25')before Hunt himself let fly from all of 30 yards only to hit the crossbar (27'). The Green-Whites stayed in control butwere unable to cause any more headaches for Duisburg who were happy to take a 0:0 into the half time break.

The second 45 minutes began with a chance for the guests, Ahanfouf just failing to connect with a Bugera delivery (52'). Leon Andreasen headed a Tim Borowski free-kick hust wide in a tie that was beginning to even out with MSV becoming more adventurous in the attack. Micoud turned a Schulz free kick just over the bar soon after Andreasen's miss but the Frenchman made up for his misguided effort picking out Hunt on the left flank with an inch perfect pass. The young striker who drove forward and struck goalwards only to see Koch get a lucky hand on the ball to deflect it once again against the crossbar, this time though, te ball bounced back into play and Nelso Valdez reacted quickly to slam the rebound home and give Werder a well earned lead (64').

MSV Duisburg found the net themselves six minutes later but Dirk Lottner's strike didn't stand as he had been offside when Kurth hit the original shot that Reinkes paried into Lottners path.

Micoud pass decides the tie

It was a text book move that was to decide the tie in the favour of Thomas Schaaf's men. Leon Andreasen climbed highest to head a ball clear at the back which Patrick Owomoyela took on and fed Micoud with. The Frenchman picked out Tim Borowski with a dream pass to send the 'Player of the Month' for November on his way. 'Boro' drove confidently forward and curled the ball around the on-rushing Koch into the top right corner of the net, to put the home side two goals clear and hand Tim Borowski a technically perfect seventh goal of the season (73').

The cushion didn't prevent the Green-Whites from coming under pressure in their own area with Lottner first almost capitalising from an Andreasen slip up. Then Owomoyela had to stretch himself to turn ex-Werder man Razundara Tjikuzu's shot against the bar only to see Peter van Houdt head the rebound against the post (83'). Werder were very happy to have luck on their side on this occasion and ride that luck out until the final whistle.

The game ended with a deserved win for the home team on the strenght of possession and chances on goal with the Hunt & Valdez satisfied with the manner in which they covered for the injured K&K strike force. The local fans had another reason to cheer with five minutes to go as Petri Pasanen made his return after a long break through injury.

Werders ninth win of the season keeps them hot on the heels of the front runners. HSV beat Cologne 3:1 to stay in touch while Bayern Munich could only manage a 0:0 in Stuttgart with the difference at the top now reduced to six points.
