Werder are not about to illude themselves. Despite the Green-Whites 6:1 win at the weekend, FC Barcelona are not going to pack their side with defenders. "Noone here thinks that Barcelona are going to pay attention to how their opponents played at the weekend, are they?", asked general manager Klaus Allofs as he made clear that no one at Werder was thinking that way. "We're far enough by now not to have to be watching what our opponents are up to with wobbly knees."

So far as Allofs is concerned, Saturdays 6:1 demolition of VfL Wolfsburg was further proof of his sides development since they last faced the Spanish champions: "It's noticeable that we've made further progress in recent weeks. We had been playing with a great deal of euphoria moving forward but now we're doing it more effectively and we're are also tighter at the back even if we can't always prevent our opponents creating chances due to our style of play", claimed Allofs who had special praise for Frank Fahrenhorst: "What we have always said has now been proven. We need 'Fahne'. We are more secure with him in the side although many rolled their eyes when we said that before."

Aside from defensive improvements, the general manager also sees his team as being in a better position having tanked up some energy: "It wasn't too much of a break for our internationals but for those who stayed here it was a good opportunity to catch their breath before a couple of tough weeks ahead." The ex-German international saw some of the effects of that during the game against Wolfsburg. "The team were bursting with energy. After they conceeded the crowd had visions of the Udinese game but the lads reacted supremely. Despite the high lead everyone still wanted to score goals - Torsten Frings didn't want to leave the pitch when we substituted him."

The players are of the same opinion as Allofs and are looking forward to the challenge in Barcelona. Miroslav Klose commented: "We have nothing to lose in Barcelona, we know Barcelona are playing fantastic football at the moment. We know we'll have a lot to do there but you can win anywhere. We will prepare for the match as normal, rest and recouperation are on the schedule for tomorrow. That's a very important day for us." Defender Naldo is equally confident going into the tie: "The way we played today makes me very confident that we can pick up a point in Barcelona." Headcoach Thomas Schaaf rounded off: "This win is an extra push for our security - we can travel to Barcelona courageously."
