On Tuesday evening Werder Bremen marked up a 14:0 (7:0) friendly win over BSC Alswede. The Green-Whites proved particularly impressive during the first half at the Sports Ground on Schanzenweg. Werder, who had made only two changes to the side which beat Udinese in the Champions League and which played at the Allianz-Arena against Bayern Munich, used their superior footballing abilities and the respect afforded to them by their opponents to make sure of the win early on.

The guests, in their red-grey 'Event Shirts', had taken a 5:0 lead within the first 15 minutes and by half time Nelson Valdez had extended the lead to 7:0 with his brace.

That put a spanner in the plans of the side from the eight division. Goalkeeper-trainer Marcus Möller had allwed himself to be filmed by DSF during his team talk before the game when he urged his side to put Andreas Reinkes goal under pressure whenever possible. The home side, in black and yellow, tried their luck with shots from distance on a wet, slippery surface - the first coming after 30 minutes which Reinke was able to gather.

The 3,500 spectators crammed around the pitch got their money's worth and were well entertained, not least by Valdez who snatched the goal of the game when he trapped the ball on his chest with his back to goal before spinning and volleying under the crossbar to make it 7:0. No chance for keeper Möller, who had played well but had to fish the ball out of the net ten times before substituting himself to concentrate on his job from the dug-out. "There was nothing for us to get against Werder, they are rightfully the offensively strongest team in the Bundesliga - we would have looked better against Bayern", admitted the coach with a wink of the eye.

The second half changes to the Werder side were noticeable but they still managed to score a further seven goals, aided by several changes by their hosts in the closing phases with Werder finding the net four times in the last five minutes. Alsweder appeared to have forgotten their tactical pre-match pep talk in front of the DSF cameras, when they were warned to battle harder during their 'Weaker' phases. Trainer Möller suggested: "When it's physically no longer possible to stand, let yourself fall on the ball!"

Despite the clear and expected win, trainer Thomas Schaaf found some praise for his opponents: "We wanted to warm ourselves up for our next challenge and get back into the flow of things, which the team did well. The opponents attempted to defend themselves which made it a successful evening."

Praise, especially for the main organiser Ulrich Haseloh, was a small comfort for the defence. Haseloh experienced a mixture of emotions with a successful evening coupled with his greatest wish not being filled. The defender had dreamed of facing Miroslav Klose just once but was denied his chance after he'd picked up a red card in a 'Kreisliga' game. A four match ban included friendly games. The decision from the local football federation proved a mystery to the Werder party too.
