On the 9th match day of the season, Werder Bremen took the top spot in the Bundesliga after humiliating 1.FC Nuremburg with a 6:2 drubbing. Miroslav Klose celebrated his comeback, having recovered from flu, in awsome style snatching a first half hat-trick (2', 34', 39') with Ivan Klasnic (66', 85') and Tim Borowski (80') sealing Werders biggest win of the season to date. Stefan Kießling (16') and Markus Schroth (57') limited the damage for the 'Club'.

39,542 spectators at the Weser Stadium saw their Green-Whites come thundering out of the blocks on a golden October afternoon. A back heal flick from Ivan Klasnic to Tim Borowski set up the opener. "Boro" broke on the left and drove his cross low across the box where Miroslav Klose beat his marker to get a toe on the ball and turn it past FC keeper Raphael Schäfer.

Nuremburg unpreturbed by Bremen begin

Nuremburg were apparently unpreturbed by Werder taking the lead and had the better of the subsequent play. Just a minute after conceeding, Cantaluppi lashed a free-kick just over the Werder crossbar from 18 meters to start a flow of FC chances before equalising through Stefan Kießling. The youngster finally got on the scoresheet having failed with a shot from distance (5') and a flying volley (15'). Lars Müller croosed in the 16th minute and Kießling rose highest to head home and pull his side deservedly back level and punish the homeside for their slack marking.

The first half continued to offer up chances at both ends but it was the ice-cold Miroslav Klose who proved the difference between the two. The German striker latched on to a perfectly weighted ball from Johan Micoud, shook off two defenders and slipped his shot cooly past the on-rushing keeper (34'). Five minutes later Klose beat Nikl to a nod on from Klasnic and found the net once again.

Klasnic makes it 4:2

Werders comfortable half-time lead was soon under threat after the break. In the 57th minute Markus Schroth exploited failings in the Werder defence to head home a delivery from Sven Müller. Anderas reinke was then forced to pull off a stunning save to deny Kießlig his second and yet another equaliser. On the direct counter, Torsten Frings, surrounded by three opponents, managed to pick out Ivan Klasnic who skipped past Schäfer and slid the ball home to make it 4:2 for the Green-Whites (66').

In the closing phases, Werder turned on the style once again against their seemingly exhausted guests. Tim Borowski got on the end of a one-two with Nelson Valdez (80') and Ivan Klasnic the struck again (85') to turn the screws on Nuremburg and make the final score 6:2.

The crowd at the Weser Stadium weren't done celebrating after the sixth goal as news of the result in Gelsenkirchen sparked a spontaneous party among the Green-White faithful when a late Schalke equaliser saw Werder return to the top of the table for the first time since the first game of the season.
