Werder Bremen must quickly shake off the disappointment of Wednesdays Champions League defeat at the hands of Barcelona and focus on their up-coming match on Saturday, 17.09.2005 at 3:30pm when Borussia Dortmund roll into Bremen.

Nelson Valdez will definately miss the tie after pulling a muscle against Barcelona. The Paraguayean striker suffered the injury early in the game but battled on until his replacement by Aaron Hunt in the 83rd minute. "After the initial examination there appears to be only a small tear. I hope to have him back by next Tuesday, Nelson tends to heal well", said head coach Thomas Schaaf. Aside from Valdez, Tim Wiese is still out (cruciate ligament), as is Ümit Davala (hip problem), but the trainer expects his Turkish international to be back soon as he is making progress. Miroslav Klose who was suspended for the Champions League game can return to the team.

The guests on the other hand have much more distinct personnel problems. Having made a rocky start to the season (2:2 in Wolfsburg, 1:2 against Schalke, 1:1 in Duisburg) the Ruhr Valley side notched up their first win (2:1) against Cologne on the last match day. Delron Buckley, who joined BVB from Armenia Bielefeld befoe the start of the season, suffered an ankle injury which will keep him out of action for at least six weeks. Buckley's Dutch striking partner Cedric van der Gun, also a new signing from ADO Den Haag, has an even bigger wait ahead of him. The young forward tore a cruciate ligament in his knee which will see him out for some six months.

If lanky Czech forward Jan Koller should miss out because of his bowel infection, the BVB trainer Bert van Marwijk will have to be inventive in selecting his attack. Likely is the introduction of David Odonkor who has made three appearances from the bench. Playmaker Tomas Rosicky also looks like making a comeback. The 25 year old who was missing against Cologne with a groin problem hopes to be back at the weekend.

With or without the two Czechs, Werder are aware of the difficulty of the task adead. "Dortmund are no longer a team filled with big names but they are a team of strong players", warned Klaus Allofs. "I saw them in Duisburg where they controlled the game and wanted to win but I expect them to be a little for defensive against us", continued the general manager. He made very clear of Werders goal: "We enter the tie as favourites, we'll play attackingly and try to pressure our opponent into making mistakes."
