There's something afoot in Kaiserslautern. Having suffered several scarce years, the "Roten Teufel" (red devil) have started the new season, with new trainer Michael Henke, astoundingly strongly. With two wins in three games, they find themselves in fifth place in the table, just one point adrift of the Green-Whites before they both clash at the Fritz-Walter Stadium on Saturday, 10.09.2005 at 3:30pm.

Werder will have positive memories of their last two visits to the Betzenberg where they won their last two games (1:0 in 03/04 and 2:1 04/05). Most memorable of course is last seasons final day win in Kaiserslautern which led to Werders qualification for the Champions League - a possible reason for concern for Thomas Schaaf and Klaus Allofs: "Lautern definately won't make it as easy for us as they did last season." The trainer is convinced "We've got to be wary there, the passion has returned to Lautern."

Altintop Euphoria

One of the main reasons for this new found confidence is shooting start Halil Altintop, who with six goals in three games joins Bayern Munichs Roy Makaay at the top of the goal scoring list. Thomas Schaaf is more than impressed by the development of the 22 year old Turkish international: "He's got a lot of talent, now his playing ability has been supplemented by goals". Ex-Lauterner Miroslav Klose warns: "We can't afford to make the mistake of concentratingon Altintop, Skela and the others are also good players."

Aside from Altintop, who pipped Ivan Klasnic to the post in the player of the month award for August, FCK could field another Turk on Saturday. Berkant Göktan, who has played for Bayern Munich, Armenia Bielefeld and most recently Besiktas Istanbul, joins Marcelo Pletsch (Borrusia Mönchengladbach) and Boubacar Sanogo (Al-Ain Sport Club) as transfare deadline signings. The 24 year old Göktan was signed to fill the gap left by Ioannis Amanitidis' move to Frankfurt. The same goes for Sanogo whose involvment is questionable through injury. Defender Hervé Lembi is also unlikely to play with an ankle injury.

Micoud and Frings return for Werder

By Werder, Torsten Frings and Johan Micoud both return to the fold having recovered from injury. This means that Thomas Schaafs only injury going into the tie is that of the long term injured goalkeeper Tim Wiese.

1. FC Kaiserslautern have so far sold some 30,000 tickets for the visit of Werder Bremen. For late deciders, tickets are still available with some 1,500 Werder fans expected to make the journey south.
