Werders chance of making club history has been spurned. After 42 years in the Bundesliga, the Green-Whites still have not managed to win three opening matches on the trot and have failed yet again on the 43rd occasion. During their 1:1 draw with VfB Stuttgart Werder were close to sealing all three points but only Ivan Klasnic could find the net (41'). Jon Dahl Tomasson scored the equaliser for the Swabians (50').

Pasanen must pass

Compared to the side which proved successful in the Champions League on Wednesday, trainer Thomas Schaaf was forced to make two changes. Following Johan Micoud who was suffering from a knee problem, Petri Pasanen was forced to sit the game out at short notice with suspected concussion. The Finn was replaced by Leon Andreasen making his first team debut in the starting eleven and Johan Micoud, as in Wattenscheid, being covered for by Daniel Jensen.

Werder controlled the early changes but without creating definate goal scoring chances. VfB set out a defensive stall but proved they can be dangerous from set pieces. From a Tiffert corner, Zvonimir Soldo, who returned to the first selection, headed just wide of the Werder post (6'). On the quarter hour Markus Babbel stole in behind the Werder defence to get on the end of a Grönkjaer cross but couldn't keep his rushed header on target.

'Schulles' throw-in sets up Klasnic

With Werders continued efforts to break down the tightly packed Stuttgart defence proving unfruitful, the Green-Whites were forced, unsuccessfully, to try their luck from distance with Tim Borowski (22') and Torsten Frings (32') both having a go. In the 40th minute things began to heat up in the VfB box. A throw in from the once again impressive German national full back Patrick Owomoyela landed at the feet of Miroslav Klose who was denied by Hildebrand at close range. The resulting throw-in was taken by Christian Schulz, who proved he can throw just as far as his international colleague. The throw-in landed in the VfB penalty area, bounced once and then onto the head of Ivan Klasnic - 1:0 for Werder. Miroslav Klose could have made it 2:0 before the break after a through ball from Daniel Jensen but Hildebrand was quick to take the ball from the strikers toes before he could get a shot away.

Five minutes after the re-start Werder got a swift wake up call. Frank Baumann lost the ball to Stranzl who sent a long ball towards Tomasson. The big Dane strode into the box from the right and shoved the ball perfectly into the far corner - 1:1. The tie took on a different tempo after the equaliser with both sides creating chances - Werder pushing forward for their second goal and Stuttgart counter attacking through Tomasson and substitute Mario Gomez.

Klose and Baumann fail to find the target

A brief example of the following highlights: From a fantastic piece of combination play through Owomoyela, Borowski, Jensen and Klose, the striker drove a shot from the left which the in -form Hildebrand somehow managed to turn over the bar (60'). The German national keeper was on hand to deny his international team mate Klose in a one-on-one situation tweleve minutes later. Twice captain Baumann could have put Werder in front firstly with a header from a Frings cross which went painstakingly just centimeters wide of the up right and then after a pass from Klose the captain blasted the ball into Hildebrands arms from a point-blank position (63'). Luckily for Werder, Soldos header which hit the crossbar (67') or Grönkjaers 16 meter drive (69'), meant Stuttgart could also do no better than their hosts.

Thomas Schaaf decided to throw on two fresh strikers (Nelson Valdez for Miroslav Klose and Aaron Hunt for Frank Baumann) in search of a winning second goal but sadly for Werder to no avail. The home side would have to be satisfied iwith just one point despite having the lions share of both shots on goal and possession. Once again, at the 43rd attempt - the football Gods didn't shine on Werder to make their historical first three wins in first three games.
