Despite Werder Bremens 2:1 win over Greek first division opponents, the Bundesliga side will want to forget the result as quickly as possible. Despite Werder Bremens 2:1 win over Greek first division opponents, the Bundesliga side will want to forget the result as quickly as possible. On the one hand all thoughts and concentration is already focused on Saturday Bundesliga opener in Bremen against Armenia Bielefeld. On the other Hand the Green-Whites failed to impress over the ninety minutes against a less than worthy opponent.

It was the small playing surface at the sport centre from SV Rot-Weiß Köhlen which caused Werder their biggest problems. " The pitch conditions cost us our playing ability. It was clear to us before the game that we wouldn't be in a position to take much from this game", commented general manager Klaus Allofs who was quick to defend his players. Striker Miroslav Klose, who was in the starting eleven which found it particularly difficult, said: "We wanted to fine tune our off the ball movement tonight which was impossible under the circumstances. We were trying the play the ball into space which just wasn't there. On the whole we can be happy with amking the best of a bad situation."

Trainer Thomas Schaaf was also encouraged by his teams performance: "It was a commited tie and as such a good test for us. It was difficult in the first half against a strong and defensive opponent." The trainer was especially pleased by the much changed side which took to the field in the second half: "We need alternatives in every position to put pressure on those who assume a position, which is exactly what we saw in the second half."

Nelson Valdez certainly managed to aquire some bonus points alongside Mohamed Zidan adding an extra bite to Werders attack. The Paraguayean put Werder in front with a header before tryiing his luck with a blast from all of 50 meters which cracked off the crossbar. The striker explained the situation himself after the game: " I saw early on that the keeper strayed often quite a way off his goalline. Because I spend most of my time with my back to the goal I said to Torsten Frings that he should have a go, then I found myself in a suitably position and tried my luck, and it almost came off!", all in all the South American wasn't all that sad about it though: "The header to make it 1:0 was something, I'M ready to start the season." Vranjes surely also felt ready for the Bundesliga kick-off after doubling Werders lead, blasting his shot, after a goalmouth scramble, under the crossbar.

Miroslav Klose hopes all of his colleagues are burning to get started into the season proper. The striker commented: "It's very important that everybody knows what this game means, we've got to get our season off with a win!."
