On Monday evening Werder failed in their second test in a row in Imst, Austria with Thomas Schaafs side going down 3:1 (1:1) to second division team TSV 1860 Munich. On a drizzly, grey night at the tight Imster Gurgeltal stadium Werder made the better start. The Green-Whites began with seven changes to the starting eleven which began against Cottbus including German internationals Tim Borowski, Patrick Owomoyela, Torsten Frings and Miroslav Klose which made for a distinctively more attractive and technically better side over long periods of the first half.

It took just tweleve minutes before the scoring began. Tim Borowski had all the time in the world to pick out the head of Miroslav Klose in the box and the German international headed unstoppably into the opposite corner leaving 1860 keeper Michael Hoffmann helpless. Kloses joy was short lived as four minutes later when Paul Agostino buried a Marcel Schäfer cross past Tim Wiese leaving The keeper with no chance and Petri Pasanen looking on in dismay.

Frings cracks one off the bar

Just a few minutes later it appeared as if Werder had taken the need anewed but Austrian referee Konrad Plautz called back 'Joe' Micoud for offside - and not unfairly as the Frenchman had strayed too far forward before collecting a pass from Klose. Signs of the old Torsten Frings reared their heads as 'Lutscher' let a volleyed shot go from all of 20 meters only to be denied by the crossbar (23'). Werder put together some good combinations throughout the first half but never really looked very threatening. TSV keeper Michael Hoffmann had to spring onto action to foil Christian Schulz from distance (42'). 1860 remained dangerous from set pieces and Michael Reisinger came close with a header before the break (44')

From the beginning of the second half Bremen looked tired, unconcentrated and created nothing up-front. Klasnic wasted two chances and Kloses attempted lob were the closest Werder came to changing the scoreline. The backline seemed shaky at the very least which gave Tim Wiese the opportunity to prove himself. Firstly Werders new keeper denied, albeit unknowingly, a hooked shot from Patrick Milchraum (49') and nine minutes later Wiese was on hand again to clear from Milchraum who had gotten on to the end of a pass from substitute Emmanuel Krontiris (58').

Krontiris turns match-winner

Werders keeper was powerless to twart TSV taking the lead. Krontiris picked out ex-Schalke striker Fabian Lamotte who swept past Frank Baumann before chipping over the advancing Wiese (69'). Ten minutes later Krontiris turned from provider to executor. Pekka Lagerbloom attempted to intercept a ball across the box from Serbian Nemanja Vucicevic, but the ball squirmed away directly to the feet of Krontiris who swiftly nipped past the Werder keeper and slid home to make the final score 3:1. Even with over ten minutes on the clock, Werder were just too flat-footed on the night to effect the outcome.
