FC Energie Cottbus were relegated to the second division back in 2003 after three years in the Bundesliga and all at the club are eagerly awaiting the return of a top club to the 'Lausitz' region : "This game is without a doubt the highlight of our preparations and we're looking forward to a really tough test in front of a packed house", exclaimed club manager Petrik Sander. Most football fans will remember Cottbus keeper Tomislav Piplica, U.S international and team captain Gregg Berhalter, Timo Rost and ex-Gladbacher Lawrence Aidoo. One time Rostock striker now in Cottbus Steffan Baumgart will miss out with a middle foot break.

The side from the Lausitz have partaken in four pre-season games so far, losing their last friendly 3:2 against Polish first division team GSK Belchatow. Petrik Sander is hoping to field his first eleven against Werder: "The only doubt is Markus Dworrak with a thigh problem, aside from that I have my best team available for selection", explained the 44 year old.
