As referee Florian Meyer blew the final whistle after 93 minutes at Signal Iduna Park, the Werder players were left hanging their heads. The Green-Whites had lost 2-0 at Borussia Dortmund – a loss that really didn’t have to be. "If we had played for 90 minutes the way we did in the second half – using the space up front and pressuring the opponents – then we could have done more today," said a disappointed Werder coach Thomas Schaaf. "But we really only watched them in the first half and let Dortmund play their game. And they can do that, you saw that."
"There’s no question, we didn’t play well today and could not really save the strong performance from Tuesday in today’s game. In the second half we played better, but you cannot just keep giving away a half. Today we could have done more, but we had to have played with more courage in the first half. That’s why we are very disappointed," said manager Klaus Allofs. "We didn’t push forward enough in the first half of the game. After the break we had the game pretty well under control. But unfortunately we conceded the 1-0 goal too early and the goal for 2-0 came at a very inopportune time. That was especially aggravating because we stood relative good for a while and also looked for our chances in the attack. At that point we were closer to 1-1 than Dortmund was to making it 2-0," said Clemens Fritz. Sebastian Prödl said the teams played "at the same level". “We could have taken a point here and improved our position," said Prödl.
Per Mertesacker was also aggravated about taking the trip back home empty-handed. "We gave them a lot today. We just cannot take advantage of things and get a good result. We did not reward ourselves for our performance," said Mertesacker. "We are very disappointed," said captain Torsten Frings. "The result is absolutely aggravating because we were not given a penalty and the second Dortmund goal was offside. That goal came just as we were pressuring them. Then it’s no surprise that we are hanging our heads. And with our personnel situation, we are just missing the people who could come in and decide the game," said Frings. "When you are up top like Dortmund is then you just have a bit of luck here or there. I think we were given a disadvantage in two or three situations today. I just think about the scene with Claudio and the offside goal. Still, that is not an excuse," said Allofs.
