Werder Bremen lost their final road match of the first half in dropping 2-0 at table toppers Borussia Dortmund. Nuri Sahin and Robert Lewandowski scored the goals for Dortmund. And the defeat leaves Werder in 11th place after the 16th game day.
In front of 80,000 spectators in Dortmund, Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf had to do without the suspended Hugo Almeida and injured Marko Arnautovic. In their place in the starting line-up was Claudio Pizarro. And Bremen got caught on the wrong foot to start with as Sahin struck home a free kick from 21 yards after nine minutes for a 1-0 lead. Werder pushed forward looking for the equaliser but could not create many chances against the stingy Dortmund defence. And the teams went into the changing rooms with Dortmund leading 1-0.
The Green-Whites established a clear advantage of play in the second half and created a number of chances. But Petri Pasanen missed a possible equaliser in the 68th minute, mis-hitting a ball from near distance. And Dortmund basically decided the match just two minutes later with Robert Lewandowski deflecting with his head Shinji Kawaga’s shot past Bremen keeper Tim Wiese to make it 2-0. Werder could not find their way back into the game after that and had to accept a 2-0 loss at the hands of Dortmund.
