The fact that Werder were already eliminated from international competition was already clear before the game against Inter Milan. But the Green-Whites showed already at the official press conference Monday afternoon that they would be taking the game against the reigning champions very seriously. And they followed up on their words with a strong 3-0 victory. "That was a good close to the Champions League season," said a satisfied manager Klaus Allofs. "The result was good and the way the team played was totally in order." Head coach Thomas Schaaf was satisfied with the performance. "We did well the things we had planned on doing. We played a good game and improved on a lot of things and respectably departed from the competition," said Schaaf. "It was a super game for us,” said Marko Marin. “We wanted to show our fans everything and I think that worked out today."

"In the first half we were a bit too tentative but we said in the break that we wanted to be more courageous. And the team did that well. You can see that some things are coming around – we had some good passing and worked very actively on defence," said Schaaf. Sebastian Prödl, who scored his first goal at Weser Stadium, praised the attack, saying: "Their coming back really made our work in the defence a lot easier." Despite all the happiness about the victory, the Green-Whites know where it stacks up. "We may have beaten the reigning champions but of course we know also that Inter did not have their best formation out there. Still, we used the space well and passed well," said Marko Marin.

"It is clear that Inter Milan will not play very often in this formation. But how the team played was in order. Still every player knows that not everything was perfect," said Schaaf. "There is no reason to get too high or celebrate exuberantly. But the game has to give us strength and confidence for the coming tasks," said Claudio Pizarro, who celebrated his comeback after four weeks out with injury by scoring just 12 minutes after being subbed into the game to make it 3-0. "We scored the goals today, had fun and gave ourselves some confidence," added Pizarro. Goal scorer Marko Arnautovic also sees his team gaining more confidence from the match. "For us as team this victory was a big step and we picked up some strength for the game on Saturday."
