Werder Bremen played to a 0-0 scoreless draw in their away match at Wolfsburg on the 15th game day of the Bundesliga. With the away point, Thomas Schaaf’s team was able to jump from 11th on the table to 10th.
Thomas Schaaf made two changes to his starting line-up from Werder’s 3-0 home win last weekend over St. Pauli with Marko Arnautovic replacing the suspended Hugo Almeida and Philipp Bargfrede taking over for Felix Kroos. In icy temperatures, Wolfsburg had the first chance of the game in the eighth minute as Diego blasted a free kick towards Bremen keeper Tim Wiese, who did a fine job fisting it away.
At the other end, Philipp Bargfrede shot just wide from 16 yards. The game became very intense and full of tough challenges with both teams fighting hard to grab the first goal. But both defences stood solid enough as to not allow a goal and send the teams into the changing rooms knotted a 0-0.
The first chance of the second half went to Werder with Aaron Hunt’s 26-yard attempt going just over the cross. Wolfsburg increased the pressure after that but Werder remained very concentrated on defence and did not allow Wolfsburg any real chances though Per Mertesacker cleared in a last second a ball destined for Werder’s goal in the 62nd minute.
Werder’s biggest chance to take the lead came in the 74th minute as Bremen were awarded a penalty after Bargfrede was taken down in the area. But Torsten Frings’ spot kick was blocked by Wolfsburg keeper Diego Benaglio off his thigh and then off the crossbar. Sebastian Prödl fouled Mario Mandzukick three minutes later in the box and Wolfsburg were given a penalty, which Edin Dzeko sent over the crossbar. Marko Marin missed Bremen’s final chance as he could not beat Benaglio one-on-one in the 83rd minute as the teams split the spoils 0-0.
