Weather conditions had not really improved forcing Werder players back to the heated pitch of Weser Stadium for team training for the second day in December. But things look a bit better personnel-wise as injury returnees Daniel Jensen, Marko Arnautovic and youth keeper Felix Wiedwald retained their fitness at Thursday afternoon’s second training.
"It looks good," said Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf, who will have three more players for the midfield and attack this weekend in Jensen, Arnautovic and Philipp Bargfrede, who was red card suspended for the St. Pauli match. And the flexibility with options does the team well.
"Of course some players have to go all out and can’t get the odd break that they actually need,” said Schaaf, whose hands have been bound often this season with the lack of alternatives. “Actually it would be important for those players with minor knocks to rest. But these things are not new for us because we have been dealing with it since the beginning of the season,” said the Werder coach.
Defender Mikael Silvestre will definitely get enough time to correctly heal from his back problems. "Mikael told me that he feels a lot better. But even though he doesn’t have any pain right now we want to rest him two or three more days," said Schaaf, adding that the Frenchman is not expected to return to team training until after the game at Wolfsburg. That is also the case for Claudio Pizarro. It will "take a little" for the Peruvian, Schaaf said. "I hope that he can be back on Sunday after the away match."
