The first half of the Bundesliga season is over with for Hugo Almeida after the sports court of the German Football Federation (DFB) suspended the Portuguese striker for three league matches. The single judge suspended Almeida after a ruling that his unsportsmanlike conduct came after a legitimate action by the opponent he later attacked. Almeida and Werder Bremen have accepted the ruling, putting it into effect.
Almeida had scored a hat-trick for the Green-Whites against St. Pauli until his attack against Pauli’s Carlos Zambrano. Shortly after the match, Almedia had hoped for a more mild punishment and apologised to the fans, the coaching staff and the team for his red card. "That cannot happen. I ask the Werder fans and my team to forgive me for this foolishness," said Almeida.
