As the Werder fans chanted "SVW is back again" in the 23rd minute, the Green-Whites had already led 2-0 through two goals by Hugo Almeida and relief spread throughout Weser Stadium. After not scoring a goal in five matches and not picking up a victory in seven matches, the score was like balm for the Green-White soul. "We are very happy that we won today. Far from everything was perfect today but altogether we did a lot of things correctly. That was many small steps forward," said a satisfied head coach Thomas Schaaf.
Manager Klaus Allofs was not sure if it was just a small step. "It was definitely a step forward and it was big enough to bring home three points," said Allofs, who was also satisfied. "The team did today what is expected of them. Everyone played with a lot of passion." Captain Torsten Frings also praised the team’s "good, cohesive performance" and was relieved to have gotten the home victory. "Of course we are overjoyed that we were able to end the negative trend of the past few weeks," said Frings.
It was clear what led to the victory. "The early lead was very important," said Clemens Fritz, who was moved out of the backline to the midfield. Head coach Thomas Schaaf knows that the match was a step in the right direction but said it cannot be a one-time showing. "I am happy that the team was rewarded for their good performance. This victory helps us push forward, but we cannot let up now, but have to continue to march on," said the coach.
