Despite scoring his first hat-trick in the Bundesliga, Hugo Almeida left the pitch with his head hanging. The three-goal scorer, who was named TARGOBANK Man of the Match, provided positive highlights for 79 minutes at Weser Stadium, hitting goals number seven, eight and nine of the season. But then the Portuguese international elbowed Pauli’s Carlos Zambrano and was sent off with a red card by referee Dr. Felix Brych. "I just lost my nerves in that situation," said Almeida after the game – an action which left both him and the spectators gasping in the 80th minute.
"I had been fouled throughout the whole game which the referee never saw," said the 26-year-old, who added: "That is not an excuse to take such a stupid action." The striker knew that something like that cannot happen at the moment with the Green-Whites in such a precarious personnel situation. "I am sad and happy at the same time," said Almeida, who appeared before the television cameras directly after the final whistle to apologise to the team and the Bremen spectators. "Leading 3-0, of course I cannot react like that. I am extremely sorry that I harmed the team and cannot help them in the coming games," said Almeida.
