Werder Bremen snapped a seven-game winless streak and a five-game scoreless stretch in beating St. Pauli 3-0 in the 14th game day of the Bundesliga. Hugo Almeida scored three goals for Thomas Schaaf’s team, which had been out-scored 0-15 in their last five matches. Almeida also was shown the red card in the late stages of the game, as was St. Pauli’s Markus Thorandt.

Head coach Thomas Schaaf made three changes to his line-up from the Tottenham loss with captain Torsten Frings coming in as well as Hugo Almeida and Petri Pasanen for the trio of Philipp Bargfrede, Daniel Jensen and Sandro Wagner. And the Green-Whites came up with the perfect start with Marko Marin feeding Almeida who struck home to make it 1-0 in the first minute – after Bremen had failed to score a goal in their last five matches. St. Pauli nearly answered but Gerald Asamoah’s header went off the crossbar in the second minute. Werder keeper Tim Wiese made a superb save on Matthias Lehmann in the 19th minute and Almeida scored his second goal a minute later, again converting after a long ball by Marin for a 2-0 advantage after just 20 minutes. St. Pauli again hit only the framework in the 21st minute – this time Fin Bartels. The Green-Whites had the better run of play over the rest of the first half but could not take advantage of their counter attacks, going into the changing rooms with a 2-0 lead.

Schaaf did not make any changes at the break and the Green-Whites had the first chance after the re-start with Torsten Frings’s long blast going just wide right after 48 minutes. Clemens Fritz cleared Asamoah’s shot at the goal line in the 63rd minute and Werder increased the lead to 3-0 in the 64th minute with Almeida hitting home a pass by Said Husejinovic, who had come on for Felix Kroos in the 53rd minute. A St. Pauli goal in the 72nd minute was disallowed due to offside. And Almeida was shown the red card in the 80th minute. St. Pauli’s Markus Thorandt also was given his marching orders in the 90th minute for his attack on Frings.
