There was not enough time for Claudio Pizarro, Marko Arnautovic or Daniel Jensen as was clear by Werder’s final training on Saturday afternoon. The trio went through strength tests in the morning and the result was that all three – as well as Mikael Silvestre – will not be available for the Green-Whites’ home match on Sunday 28 November 2010 against St. Pauli. Head coach Thomas Schaaf will also have to make do without Philipp Bargfrede, who is suspended after his yellow-red card from last week against Schalke.
Hugo Almeida meanwhile was back on the training pitch for the final training session ahead of the North Derby and was given the green light to play on Sunday. "Everything is okay again. I can play," said the Portuguese striker, who sat out the Champions League match on Wednesday in London with a thigh strain. Also back in the squad is captain Torsten Frings, who sat out a suspension in London, as well as U23 players Dominik Schmidt, Felix Kroos, Onur Ayik, Lennart Thy and Pascal Testroet, who all were in the squad against Tottenham.
Also in the mix is defender Leon-Aderemi Balogun, who celebrated an important victory along with Testroet and Thy in the third division on Friday, as Werder’s youngsters beat Bayern Munich’s second side 2-0 with Thy (28th) and Testroet (29th) scoring the goals.
The following 18 players were nominated by Thomas Schaaf for the game against St. Pauli: Wiese, Mielitz – Pasanen, Fritz, Marin, Hunt, Prödl, Husejinovic, Kroos, Wagner, Frings, Almeida, Mertesacker, Thy, Balogun, Schmidt, Testroet, Ayik
