Now that's a stylish start, as to be expected. On Tuesday evening Werder steamrolled SV Blua-Weiß Bornreihe 16:1 in their first pre-season friendly. 4,000 frantic supporters packed the sports ground and were only kept waiting for 14 minutes before the goals began.

Ivan Klasnic got the ball rolling with two real poachers goals thanks to fine set up play by Nelson Valdez and Frank Baumann respectively (14'/17') before Christian Hasloop snatched an early consolation (20'). Just two minutes later Werders Croatian striker grabbed his hat-trick after some good combination play between Valdez and Marco Stier. From that point on the Bornreihe keeper found himself fishing the ball out of his net with monotonous regularity. Marco Stier scored Werders fourth in the 23rd minute and Klasnic got on the end of a pass from Micoud to make it 5:1 (25'). Before the break the energetic Nelson Valdez increased the scores (34', 45' and 45'+2) and Ümit Davala from the spot (36') made the half time score 9:1. An improvement for Bornreihe on last seasons 9:0 scoreline at the break.

During the break, trainer Thomas Schaaf took the oportunity to try out his alternatives and made eight changes. Changes which didn't affect the flow of the game with Werder still hungry for goals. Substitute Mohamed Zidan was on the mark three times (55', 80' and 87'), Aaron Hunt once (78') and Valdez twice more in the 75th minute and from the spot in the 83rd after a foul on Hunt which increased the score to an almost record breaking 16:1.

Five time scorer Nelson Valdez, along with Ivan Klasnic and Mohamed Zidan (3 each) were Werders most successful players on the night. As new signings Jurica Vranjes, Jelle van Damme and Leon Andreasen could enjoy the cheers of the Werder faithful, keeper Tim Wiese will have to wait for his first real test. The 23-year-old made his Green-White debut in the second half but didn't have a single shot to hold.

Werder Bremens next friendly will take place on Saturday, 09.07.2005 in the "BetandWin-supermatch" at Norderney SV Niederkassel, the question remains if the Kreisliga side can at all test their Big League opponents.
