All involved with Werder Bremen hope to forget this afternoon at the Veltins Arena at Schalke as quickly as possible. The 4-0 defeat against Schalke was the Green-Whites’ fourth away loss this season with a goal difference of 8-21. "We had to accept another disappointment today. We could not do the things that we had worked on during the week," said a disappointed head coach Thomas Schaaf after the game. "We are absolutely not satisfied with our performance today and cannot accept it."
"After falling behind 1-0 we made things increasingly tougher for ourselves. We basically fell asleep on the set pieces and were not mentally awake. We have to get better in all parts of the team. The team confidence falls more and more with each goal conceded," added Schaaf. Daniel Jensen agreed that the difference was the first goal. "In the first 15 minutes things looked pretty good. But the first goal totally threw us off," said the Danish international.
"We made things much too easy for the opponents," said manager Klaus Allofs. "We were missing the drive to push forward. All told we are playing too unprofessional and unconcentrated. By not staying attentive, we lost the game ourselves." The final result wasn’t the only thing that irritated the Green-Whites as Wesley had to be subbed out in the second half with a muscle injury and Philipp Bargfrede unnecessarily was shown yellow-red card in the final stages. "It looks like a strain for Wesley, and unfortunately Philipp Bargfrede will also not be available next week. He actually did a pretty good job but him being out will affect us of course. The personnel situation is getting tight. It doesn’t look very rosy," said Allofs.
