Willi Lemko, chairman of the Werder Bremen supervisory board, was awarded on Monday 15 Novemberg 2010 with the BOBBY media prize by the Bundesvereinigung Lebenshilfe organisation in Berlin for his special dedication for handicapped athletes.
In his function as UN Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, the 64-year-old helped bring attention to the special performances of athletes with handicaps at large events like the Paralympics and Special Olympics. "I am happy about the award. Dedication for athletes with handicaps is a special concern for me. The Special Olympics in Bremen recently made clear what performances these athletes as well are capable of," said Lemke.
The Lebenhilfe group hands out the BOBBY – named after Bobby Brederlow, an actor with Down Syndrome – every year for exemplary dedication for people with handicap and helping clarify and break down prejudices. The unendowed media prize – a bronze sculpture in Bobby Brederlow’s likeness – has been handed out 12 times with Günther Jauch, Alfred Biolek and Guildo Horn among the past winners. Last year the ARD production "Polizeiruf 110" won the prize for the "Rosi’s Baby" episode.
