Werder Bremen failed to bounce back from their bitter loss last week at Stuttgart with a victory, playing to a 0-0 draw at home against Eintracht Frankfurt on the 12th Bundesliga game day. But the draw did snap Bremen’s four game losing streak.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf made just one change from the line-up which lost 6-0 at Stuttgart with Petri Pasanen replacing the injured Claudio Pizarro while Wesley moved into the midfield. The Green-Whites took charge of the game right away, creating a number of chances in the early going including Sebastian Prödl’s header in the second minute which went just wide left. Bremen’s early momentum was gone after 15 minutes and Frankfurt had chance in the 22nd and 30th minutes by Theofanis Gekas. Frankfurt keeper Oka Nikolov kept his sheet clean with a fine save on Marin, who also headed just over the crossbar. Werder were a bit unlucky not to have taken the lead before the teams went to half-time deadlocked at 0-0.
Schaaf did not make any changes at the break but his team struggled to create chances after the re-start though Torsten Frings’s long distance shot went just left after 56 minutes. The Green-Whites continued their push forward looking for the victory but could not solve Nikolov, who was too strong for Frings (67th)and Daniel Jensen(71st). Schaaf tried to change the attack with Marko Arnautovic coming on for Sandro Wagner after 68 minutes. But Bremen’s offence was missing the likes of Claudio Pizarro and Hugo Almeida. Gekas missed a chance in the 73rd and Bremen keeper Tim Weise stopped Gekas six minutes later as Werder at least did not allow a goal.
