Werder Bremen’s downward trend continued on the 11th game day of the Bundesliga as Thomas Schaaf’s team came up with a disappointing showing in losing 6-0 at Stuttgart. Torsten Frings missed a penalty for Bremen while Ciprian Marica, Cacau (2), Christian Gentner, Georg Niedermeier and Arthur Boka tallied for Stuttgart.
The game started poorly for the Green-Whites, falling behind after just 10 minutes as Ciprian Marica collected Timo Gebhart’s cross and beat Werder keeper Tim Wiese to make it 1-0. Wiese stopped Marica just a minute later to keep Bremen in the game. The poor evening continued in the 24th minute as Torsten Frings failed to convert a penalty after Aaron Hunt had been taken down in the area. It was Frings’s first missed spot kick after 19 successful attempts. Cacau increased the Stuttgart lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute. And the German international Cacau shocked the Green-Whites again in the 45th minute, beating Wiese again for a 3-0 Stuttgart lead at the break.
Things did not really improve in the second half for Werder and their defence. Tim Wiese was able to stop Cacau’s penalty attempt in the 61st minute. But Christian Gentner pushed the lead to 4-0 in the 68th minute, and Georg Niedermeier made it 5-0 five minutes later. While Bremen pushed forward looking for at least a consolation goal, Stuttgart grabbed a counter attack goal through Arthur Boka in the 86th minute for the final 6-0 score line. The poor showing left Thomas Schaaf’s team with 14 points in 11th place.
