After the 2-0 home loss in the Champions League against Twente Enschede, Werder Bremen’s next tough task awaits on Sunday with an away match at Stuttgart. "There are some clubs who expected to be in other positions and had slow starts to the season. That certainly is the case with Stuttgart," said Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf. "They were also hit with numerous injuries in the first couple games and are now fighting to catch up on the table."
Werder also hope to move up the table on Sunday with a victory. "The loss against Nuremberg stalled our march forward. We have only played 10 games so it is still way too early to start thinking about new goals. We have had streaks in the past and collected points which were enough for international football," said manager Klaus Allofs.
One issue for the game on Sunday will be Mikael Silvestre, who did not play against Enschede on Tuesday. "Mika has been exemplary from day one working his way into the team and said when you need me I am there," Schaaf praised the Frenchman, who was thrown into the deep end with the numerous injuries despite a long break and little preparations. "I don’t want to embellish his performances. We all know that he can play better. But he is not the scapegoat for everything," said Schaaf. Because of the absolute dedication the 33-year-old shows daily, the head coach was aggravated about the fans’ reaction to his substitution from the game against Nuremberg. "We don’t want to tell the spectators if they can jeer or not. But one should think about the way and manner which they go about it," said Schaaf, wishing for more understanding that not everything is working out for Silvestre on the pitch as he had imagined.
