After referee Alain Hamer blew the final whistle for the Champions League match between Werder Bremen and Twente Enschede a number of Werder players were left with hanging heads. They had fought, went hard into challenges and created good goal chances. But in the end the Green-Whites ended up having to deal with a 2-0 loss at home. "The team gave a good effort, gave their all, and I think deserved more than this defeat," said manager Klaus Allofs about his team’s clear improvement from the Bundesliga match on the weekend against Nuremberg.

"The team wanted to present themselves differently than on Saturday. Some players really ran a lot and you could tell that the entire team was disappointed that we lost today," said head coach Thomas Schaaf, who was satisfied with the showing of his team. "The team played with heart but altogether made too many mistakes. It didn’t matter if it was on offence or defence," added Klaus Allofs. "We just haven’t been able to use our chances right now, meaning scoring goals," added Schaaf about the many missed scoring opportunities. "On Saturday we missed going ahead 2-0 and today we could have taken the lead."

One scene which affected the game in the closing stages was the red card for captain Torsten Frings. "Of course the red card was the turning point in the game," said vice captain Per Mertesacker. "I was convinced that we could do it. But we are just not scoring goals in the important moments," added "Merte". And for Marko Marin, Frings’ expulsion was the final link in a chain of mistakes. "We are moving forward when we lose the ball and then have a counter going the other way," said the Werder midfielder about the scene with Frings in the 75th minute. Schaaf was aggravated about the red card because the team had done well in the back until then. "But after that we were missing a position in the defence to remain calm," said the coach.

"We should just enjoy the final two games in the Champions League, play freely and show what we can do," said Torsten Frings, who believes the team can build upon the showing against Twente. "It sounds strange, but we have to continue playing as we have. Fighting together and working together." And keeper Sebastian Mielitz added: "If we can build upon the united team showing from today, then we can do it. After all, in football you have to just keep going."
