Werder Bremen’s chances of reaching the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League took a major blow on Tuesday with a 2-0 loss at home against Twente Enschede in Group A. Luuk de Jong and Nacer Chadli scored within three minutes for Enschede while Werder finished the game with just 10 men as Torsten Frings was shown the red card shortly before the goals were scored. The Green-Whites only have two points from four matches and must win their final two games to reach the knockout stage.

Werder coach Thomas Schaaf made two changes to his starting line-up from the loss against Nuremberg with Philipp Bargfrede and Aaron Hunt replacing Mikael Silvestre and Marko Arnautovic. In addition, Sebastian Mielitz once again was between the posts for the injured Tim Wiese. The 30,000 spectators at Weser Stadium saw an offensive showdown right from the start. The guests from the Netherlands however had the better chances early on though Wesley was able to slow the Dutch counter attack. At the other end, Bremen had a number of chances, none bigger than in the 38th minute as Claudio Pizarro struck only the left post. And Hugo Almeida could not hit home the rebound, leaving the game knotted at 0-0 at the break.

Shortly after the half-time, Marko Marin’s attempt was stopped by Twente’s keeper while Sebastian Mielitz fended away Nacer Chadli’s bicycle kick just before the hour mark. Shortly thereafter, Wesley could not beat Enschede’s keeper and Claudio Pizarro and Hugo Almeida also failed to use chances. The Green-Whites went a man down with 15 minutes remaining as Torsten Frings saw a red card for his tackle of Bryan Ruiz as last defender. Werder could not overcome the Dutch side after that. Nacer Chadli gave Twente a 1-0 lead in the 81st minute as his shot was deflected past Bremen keeper Sebastian Mielitz. And Luuk de Jong made the score 2-0 with his header in the 84th minute to decide the game. Werder are last in the group with two points, five points behind Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan and three points behind Twente.
