Werder Bremen players left the pitch with heads hanging after a 3-2 loss at home against Nuremberg. The disappointment about the past 90 minutes of action and the missed chance to jump to third place was clear on their players’ and management’s faces. "Once again we had the complete spectrum in our game today. At the beginning we played thrilling football and at the end it was horrible to watch," said manager Klaus Allofs about the game against Nuremberg.
"We started well, applied pressure and did well the things we planned on. After that we weren’t very biting and did not have the absolute will to score a goal," said head coach Thomas Schaaf about his team’s showing after the break. "The second half was dreadful. We didn’t do those things anymore and it seems like we didn’t even win a challenge."
Torsten Frings found some clear words after the game. "We beat ourselves today. Just like in Munich we had a lot of chances which we carelessly missed out on. We are just thinking oh the next chance will come in two minutes. But eventually no more come," said the captain about a possible reason for loss. "We have to decide the game ourselves, but we were missing the killer instinct with the missed chances. In addition we are also making individual mistakes in every game or not really working well as a team on defence," said the 33-year-old. "We especially have to start improving the defensive mindset – 21 goals allowed are clearly too many."
Thomas Schaaf agreed with his captain. "I have to agree with Torsten that we were too careless with the defensive situation today. It is incomprehensible that you don’t improve the situation after taking the lead but run into problems yourself," criticised the coach about the behaviour of his team after the early lead. "We have to accept the blame for this carelessness."
