It was a very bitter defeat for Werder Bremen as the Green-Whites dominated the game over major stretches against the record and reigning German Cup champions Bayern Munich. But Werder failed to convert a number of chances in the second half and in the end were eliminated from the German Cup, ending their hopes of a third straight appearance in the final. "We beat ourselves today," said a visually disappointed Thomas Schaaf after the match at Allianz Arena. "We had five clear chances in the second half. If you do not use those and get yourself an advantage, then it will be difficult. We were bitterly punished for not using our chances and have to be aggravated about that," added the head coach.
"This is a defeat that really hurts," said manager Klaus Allofs. "We played very well today. The only charge we have to accept today is that we lacked the coolness to use our opportunities," said an aggravated Torsten Frings. Claudio Pizarro used an old football adage after the game at Allianz Arena: "We had so many opportunities, but football is just like that. If you don’t use your chances up front then you get one in the back," said the Peruvian striker. "We are very sad that we will not be in Berlin this season but now we have to concentrate on the other competitions."
Head coach Thomas Schaaf was not quite ready to think about the up-coming tasks so soon after the game. "This defeat was totally unnecessary," said the 49-year-old coach. "We travelled here to advance." And the Green-Whites were closer to that goal after just two minutes as Claudio Pizarro gave Bremen the lead. "After that early goal we did not play that well. We just stood too far back," said Schaaf. "The lead did not do us much good," said Klaus Allofs. "Maybe you think that you lead and you concentrate on managing things and give the opponents too much space," added the manager. "And we talked about just that at half-time."
