After reaching the last two German Cup finals, Werder Bremen were bounced from the 2010-11 German Cup in the second round, losing 2-1 at reigning champions Bayern Munich. In a re-match of the final from last May – which Bayern won 4-0 in Berlin – Claudio Pizarro scored for Thomas Schaaf’s team. But Bastian Schweinsteiger scored twice for Bayern, who moved into the Round of 16.

Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf made just change after his team’s win at Gladbach with Philipp Bargfrede replacing Aaron Hunt. And the Green-Whites could not have started any better, taking the lead 1-0 after just two minutes with Claudio Pizarro hitting home with his knee Marko Arnuatovic’s cross from the left side. Bremen had the next top chance to double the advantage in the 25th minute but Sebastian Prödl headed wide right from just six yards. Bayern made Werder pay for their inability to score, equalising 1-1 in the 27th minute as Bastian Schweinsteiger hit home a loose ball. Neither team could gain control of the game the rest of the first half and the score was 1-1 at half-time.

Thomas Schaaf sent out the same line-up for the second half and the Green-Whites collected a number of chances around the hour mark. Wesley’s shot was deflected into the side netting in the 59th minute and then Sebastian Prödl’s header goal at the hour mark was disallowed. Two minutes later Hamit Altintop saved Claudio Pizarro’s header at the line. Marko Arnautovic failed to beat Bayern keeper Hans Jörg Butt in the 64th minute one-on-one and the Austrian hammered a long free kick against the crossbar a minute later. Werder once again were punished for not taking advantage of their chances and Schweinsteiger scored his second goal in the 74th minute to make it 2-1 with a long blast. Schaaf reacted immediately subbing in Hugo Almeida and Aaron Hunt. But Bremen’s run of goal chances were done with though reserve keeper Sebastian Mielitz stopped Altintop to keep Bremen’s hopes alive. In the end, Bremen will have to watch the rest of the tournament from home.
