Werder Bremen secured three important points away from home on the ninth game day of the Bundesliga to jump to eighth place with a 4-1 victory at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Marko Marin, Wesley, Aaron Hunt and Claudio Pizarro scored for Werder while Werder centre back Per Mertesacker scored an own goal for Gladbach.

Head coach Thomas Schaaf made four changes to his starting line-up with Sebastian Mielitz replacing injured keeper Tim Wiese while Mikael Silvestre, Marko Marin and Marko Arnautovic started for Petri Pasanen, Philipp Bargfrede and Hugo Almeida. And Schaaf’s team came up with a perfect start in front of 53,500 spectators at Borussia Park, jumping ahead 1-0 after five minutes as Marko Marin’s free kick from the left side went untouched into the goal. Werder increased the pressure in the early going and doubled the advantage in the 12th minute. Wesley had a long run and fine solo action and made it 2-0 with a deflected shot from 16 yards. Reserve keeper Sebastian Mielitz made two strong saves against Mohamadou Idrissou to give the Green-Whites a 2-0 lead at the break.

After another superb save by Mielitz early in the second half, Bremen appeared to finish off Borussia with Aaron Hunt’s shot being deflected off Filip Daems and past Logan Bailly for a 3-0 lead in the 51st minute. Gladbach pulled a goal back after 67 minutes when Per Mertesacker ran into a save by Mielitz and struck the ball into his own net for a 3-1 score. But Claudio Pizarro ended all hopes for Gladbach in the 75th minute, blasting home Wesley’s cross to make it 4-1. It was Pizarro’s 134th Bundesliga goal, making him the Bundesliga’s all-time top scoring foreign-born player in league history.
