In the end, Werder’s 1-1 draw in their Champions League away match at Twente Enschede was nearly the first victory on Dutch soil. The Green-Whites trailed 1-0 on a goal by Theo Janssen (75th) until 10 minutes left in the game, but afterwards all agree that a victory was possible. "Because of the second half we could have won here," said head coach Thomas Schaaf in name of all the Bremen troops. "But we can be very satisfied with the performance and the main thing is that we picked up a point," said the coach.
Klaus Allofs was also satisfied with the showing of the Green-Whites. "Our play was not brilliant but it continues to get better. In the first half we did not really press forward. But it was important that we could step it up with the substitutions of Marko Arnautovic and Marko Marin," said the Werder manager. Per Mertesacker was also satisfied. "For 70 minutes I really had a good feeling. And then we got into trouble again failing to stay concentrated. There are still points on which we need to improve, but there were some good points as well and especially on defence that was a bit more than recently," said the German international.
After taking home one point, Werder still have a chance of reaching the Round of 16. "We now have three more games and play twice at Weser Stadium. We have to try to win both of those games and we can always pick up a point away as well," said the 33-year-old captain Torsten Frings. And it seemed ironic that the crucial 1-1 equaliser was scored by Marko Arnautovic, who was under contract with Twente from 2006 to 2009. "Marko played a good game after his substitution," praised Thomas Schaaf of the 21-year-old. "You could see his class in the scene before the goal. He fought through, using his body and has very good acceleration," added Schaaf. And it was clear that Arnautovic could not really enthusiastically celebrate his first Champions League goal. "I did that out of respect for the fans and my former teammates," he admitted after the game.
