Werder Bremen came back for a 1-1 draw at FC Twent Enschede on the third game day action in Group A of the Champions League. Werder are last in the group but since have chances of reaching the knockout stages. Marko Arnautovic scored the goal for Thomas Schaaf’s team while Theo Janssen struck for Enschede.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf made three changes compared to their last match in the Bundesliga with Claudio Pizarro, Philipp Bargfrede and Petri Pasanen coming in for Marko Arnautovic, Marko Marin and Mikael Silvestre. Enschede had more control of the match in the early going and the first good goal chance through Bryan Ruiz in the 12th minute. Enschede’s captain Peter Wisgerhof was forced out with injury after just 24 minutes and Werder found more run of play and were close eight minutes later. But Hugo Almeida’s shot was superbly fended to corner by Twente keeper Nikolaj Mihajlov after the Portuguese attacker had gotten past the final Twente defender. Bremen keeper Tim Wiese had to be subbed out in the 37th minute with a right knee injury despite not being touched by any other player with Sebastian Mielitz entering the game. Enschede had one more chance just before the break but the teams went into the dressing rooms knotted at 0-0.
The Bremen coach did not make any changes at half-time but took over more control of the proceedings. Schaaf brought on Marko Arnautovic for Hugo Alemeida at the hour-mark to a chorus of unfavourable boos as the Austrian returned to his former club. The Green-Whites tried to increase the pressure but it was Twente who grabbed the lead in the 75th minute. A cross into the box landed at Theo Janssen, who beat Mielitz with his second attempt to make it 1-0. But the returnee Arnautovic knotted the game in the 80th minute, beating Mihajlov on his second chance after a fine pass from Claudio Pizarro for a 1-1 score. Mielitz made a fine save in the 86th minute and Luuk de Jong blasted into the side netting a minute later. And then a goal by Pizarro was disallowed in the first seconds of stoppage time as the game ended a 1-1 draw, leaving both teams with two points after three games.
