It was the 68th minute when Claudio Pizarro was called over to the coaching bench by assistant coach Matthias Hönerbach with the score knotted at 1-1, with the Peruvian to be subbed in shortly thereafter. Head coach Thomas Schaaf’s bringing on the Peruvian gave his team the right impulse for the final stretch. "When Claudio Pizarro was substituted in, we ran into a lot of problems," Freiburg coach Robin Dutt said at the post-game press conference. Just four minutes after entering the game, "Piza" already had a great chance, heading just over the crossbar a corner by Aaron Hunt.
"Our game has more pressure and is more refined with Claudio. Things were too transparent before his coming in. He is an important player who young players look up to and help develop," said manager Klaus Allofs of the 32-year-old striker. Head coach Thomas Schaaf also praised Pizarro, adding: "Claudio helped us a lot with his quality after coming in. He did not just control the ball but also put players in the right place," said the coach, talking especially about Pizarro’s assist on the 2-1 winning goal in the 73rd minute. "That assist was not a fluke," added Allofs. "He worked through the outside in sensational fashion and wanted to play the ball right there. That move speaks for his quality."
