Per Mertesacker, Marko Marin and Tim Wiese were not the only three Werder players who were able to celebrate three points in their Euro2012 qualifiers Tuesday night. Hugo Almeida and Daniel Jensen also saw their teams take the full three points while Austrians Marko Arnautovic and Sebastian Prödl picked up one point in a crazy match agaisnt Belgium. And Werder defender Petri Pasanen lost with the Finnish national team against Hungary.
The fans in Brussels were given quite a show with the Austrians leading 3-2 until the 87th minute in the Belgian capital. Werder striker Marko Arnautovic, who had scored two goals on Friday against Azerbaijan, had made it 2-1 with his goal. But by the 90th minute it was the Belgians who were leading 4-3. But former Werder player Martin Harnik scored in stoppage time to give Austria one point with a 4-4 (1-2) draw.
At Laugardalsvöllur Stadium in Reykajavik, Portugal and Werder striker Hugo Almeida beat hosts Iceland 3-1. Cristiano Ronaldo (3'), Heiðar Helguson (17') and Raúl Mereiles (22') had scored before Almeida was subbed out in the 66th minute for Helger Postiga, who struck the final goal six minutes later.
Denmark meanwhile beat Cyprus 2-0 in Group H with goals by Morten Rasmussen (47') and Kaspar Lorentzen (81'). Bremen's Daniel Jensen remained on the bench after the midfielder suffered a minor injury on Friday against Portugal.
Petri Pasanen avoided an injury but could not keep Finland from losing their Euro2012 qualifier, falling 2-1 at home against Hungary. Adam Szalai (50') gave Hungary the lead before getting equalised by Mikael Forssell (86'). But Balazs Dzsudzsák scored in the 90th minute as Hungary grabbed the victory.
On Monday, Werder's Brazilian Wesley helped the Selecao to a 2-0 win over Ukraine. The midfielder played the final three minutes for his second appearance with the Brazilian national team.
