While the German national team celebrated their 3-0 victory over Turkey, some 26,500 spectators at Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium were in great spirits as the Austrians and their two Werder players Sebastian Prödl and Marko Arnautovic eased to a 3-0 (1-0) victory over Azerbaijan in the Euro2012 qualification. Their Portuguese teammate Hugo Almeida also had reason for cheer as the striker helped Portugal to a 3-1 win over Denmark.
In the Austrian capital, Sebastian Prödl gave Didi Constantini's team the lead after just six minutes with a header. Marko Arnautovic, playing for the senior side for the first time since playing for the U21 team, added two more goals in the 53rd and 90th minutes to finalise a 3-0 win. Austria's six points from two matches and 5-0 goal difference leave them ahead of Turkey and behind Germany in second place in Group A of Euro2012 qualifying.
Werder teammates Hugo Almeida and Daniel Jensen meanwhile faced off in Porto in a Group H qualifier. Portugal won 3-1 thanks to two goals by Nani (29th, 31st) while Ricardo Carvalho struck an own goal (79th) and Cristiano Ronaldo gave Portugal the decider in the 85th minute. Almeida was substituted out for Helder Postiga in the 69th minute. Daniel Jensen was taken out in the 58th minute for Christian Eriksen. Portugal's first victory in the Euro qualification moves them into second place. The Danes are third in the Group H with a game in hand.
On Thursday, Werder's new acquisition Wesley celebrated his debut with the Brazilian national team. The Brazilian was substituted into the game in the 81st minute of a 3-0 friendly win over Iran in Abu Dhabi. Bremen's Petri Pasanen will play on Tuesday 12 October 2010 in a Euro 2012 qualifier for Finland against Hungary in Group E.
