A superb showing by Werder centre back Per Mertesacker helped the German national team to a 3-0 (1-0) victory over Turkey in the Euro2012 qualifier at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. Whenever Turkey charged into the German area, the Bremen star was on hand to clear away the trouble. Mertesacker even caused problems offensively, nearly making it 2-0 in the 45th minute though his header went just over the crossbar. Werder midfielder Marko Marin entered the game shortly for Germany in the 90th minute.
Bayern striker Miroslav Klose played a big role in the deserved 3-0 victory, scoring two goals against Turkey in the 42nd and 87th – the second tally being his 57th goal for Germany. The 2-0 goal was scored by Mesut Özil in the 79th, who was somewhat a lost son as Özil is the son of Turkish parents. Out of respect for the people of his parents’ homeland, the midfield star from Real Madrid did not really celebrate his third goal in German dress.
After the third win in three matches, Germany are sole leaders of the qualifying Group A and on a strong path to reaching the Euro2012 in Poland and Ukraine. German national team coach Joachim Löw hopes to celebrate his 42nd victory in 60 internationals as coach on Tuesday in Astana against Kazakhstan.
