The German football national team Tuesday afternoon received the Silver Bay Laurel Leaf as part of a festive ceremony at Schloss Bellevue. German President Christian Wulff and Chancellor Angela Merkel honoured Joachim Löw’s team for their tremendous performance and successful showing at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Among the honoured players were Werder players <b<Marko Marin</b>, Tim Wiese and Per Mertesacker, the latter who was given the award for the second time after the 2006 World Cup. Werder’s defender was especially excited about the award because it shows "how highly the team’s performance is honoured”. He added: “It is a nice feeling to accept this kind of award."
In addition to the honours for the national team players, coach Löw was handed the Federal Cross of Merit by the President. The German Football Federation delegation on hand for the celebration was headed by DFB President Dr. Theo Zwanziger. Before the festivities, Löw called his team together for the first training session at the team hotel Grand Hyatt Berlin in preparations for the Euro2012 qualifier on Friday 8 October 2010 at 8:45 p.m. against Turkey.
