Werder’s national team players are travelling around the world the next two weeks. Just hours after the away match in Leverkusen, the first Green-White internationals made their way to their respective national teams.
All told, nine professionals from Bremen’s squad have been nominated for friendlies or qualification matches. The longest trip will be taken by new international Wesley as the 23-year-old Brazilian has been nominated for the first time by national team coach Mano Menezes for the Selecao’s test matches against Iran in Abu Dhabi (7 October) and against Ukraine in Derby, England (11 October). Sebastian Prödl and Marko Arnautovic meanwhile are old hats with the Austrian national team. The defender Prödl has already earned 25 caps for Austria while the 21-year-old Arnautovic could make his sixth appearance in the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Azerbaijan on 8 October 2010 in Vienna or 12 October 2010 against Belgium.
Werder striker Hugo Almeida has been named to the roster of Portugal’s new national team coach Hugo Bento for the qualifiers against Denmark (on 8 October 2010 in Porto) and Iceland (12 October 2010 in Reykjavik). Almeida and Portugal will square off against his Werder teammate Daniel Jensen, who will play for Denmark in Porto and then four days later in Copenhagen against Cyprus. Petri Pasanen and Finland for their part will be looking for three points on Tuesday 12 October against Hungary in their Euro2012 qualification.
The German national team trio of Tim Wiese, Per Mertesacker and Marko Marin are already meeting today in Berlin where they will be awarded with Silver Bay Laurel Leaf from German President Christian Wulff on Tuesday 5 October 2010 for finishing third at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Joachim Löw’s team will then take on Turkey on Friday 8 October 2010 at 8:45 p.m. in the Euro2012 qualification and then four days later in Astana against Kazakhstan.
